When I started working in Fast Food a few years after my son's birth, I wasn't sure how I could apply myself as a Jedi. I found myself getting close to the managers and acting as a sounding board for them. I wasn't trying to get to know them so that I could become a manager or anything- I got to know them because they genuinely needed someone they could talk to and rely on when there was a stressful situation.
These were people with families and their only real goal was to ensure their families were provided for. I never felt like applying this skill was ever really enough to call it an "Applied Prowess". So I pursued Search and Rescue with my offline Jedi Group in the area.
Today, however, I witnessed the real value of cultivating a Scholarly Art of Crisis Intervention Peer Support (CIPS) and the Spiritual Art of Meditation.
I got a call from a client that has been going through...a lot doesn't begin to cover it. Then today, the one thing we had hoped would go right...started crashing down upon us. We'll know the full conclusion tomorrow.
Being able to apply the knowledge I gained from CIPS, gave my client space to vent and not feel like she was being a burden. Making sure that we developed a plan to handle the remaining obstacles of the day also fits into my secondary art: being a Virtual Assistant. It doesn't seem like it would be a difficult job, but I've learned lately just how difficult this job is for someone that can't hammer down some of the basics of time management...let alone being able to learn some rather ridiculous software designs (seriously some of these systems are a nightmare x.x).
But more than just CIPS, daily meditation contributed to my ability to help my client through today's portion of the crisis. How? Because I recognize that there is a difference between who I was in my earlier days in the community and who I am today. You wouldn't know it if you didn't know me fairly well back then (and I doubt anyone in the community truly knew how vocal I would get with someone for saying certain kinds of words XD). Back then I was stringent on the language used around me, but through meditative practice, I've grown to a point where I recognize the value of letting someone just run with it.
One might think that these things don't need real cultivation. The truth is, I didn't think so before I took up meditation and the CIPS course. I bet that if you look back on your own training and how you've applied it to things in the world, you'll be surprised how much you actually had to learn in order to marry your experience with it.
Curious what moments you've had where you realized the value the training and meditation you've done to make yourself a better Jedi. . Share in the comments below.
