Inflexible as Fate and Exacting as Necessity Rising with us in the morning and Watching at our Pillows at night. Duty is with us always, imperative as Destiny.
A Light Jedi's first duty is to the Force. Before he can serve wisely, compassionately and effectively he must be at one with the Force. He must be clear and listen carefully to the will of the Force. The Force's germination of good character is through the acquisition of knowledge..the spiritual food of the Jedi. The will of the Force is felt in one's heart. The power and grace present in the bond between Master and Padawan is eternal and is blessed by that which is above.
YODA Confer on you, the level of Jedi Knight the Coucil does. But agree on you taking this boy as your Padawan learner, I do not.
OBI-WAN Qui-Gon believed in him. I believe in Qui-Gon.
YODA The Chosen One the boy may be; nevertheless, grave danger I fear in his training.
OBI-WAN Master Yoda, I gave Qui-Gon my word. I will train Anakin. Without the approval of the Council if I must.
YODA Qui-Gon's defiance I sense in you. Need that, you do not. Agree, the council does. Your apprentice, young Skywalker will be.
Obi Wan displays an essentially Jedi trait, his willingness to follow the dictates of his duty to his fallen Master over the rules and regulations of the Jedi Council are reminders to us all as Jedi to stay close to the source of all things- which is the love present in the Light application of the Force. The tenderness that Qui Gon displays toward Obi Wan in the closing moments of his life are indicative of the powerful bond between Master and Padawan.
It is important to note that Obi Wan is not just following Qui Gon's orders, he is acting upon his internal impressions as well as his sense of duty. A Jedi knows that obedience to the law does not mean subservience to tyranny. Spiritual tyranny is the enemy of the Jedi. A Jedi must weigh carefully what he promises and pledges- for he who is false to his promises will be false to his family, friends, nation and conception of the Force.
As in the case of the Samurai, Bushido, Knights Templar and other historic orders of chivalry- the word of a Jedi, once given must be sacred.
