On one hand we have people like Irvine who were demanding action. Something must be done in accordance with our Path. The problem with this, especially in recent cases, is that a Private Message isn't going to solve or stop the problem. Sending love and light is not going to resolve the issue. People want action, they want something done.
And in response the Light Jedi, who see the same problem, seek to do exactly that (act). By creating a system that allows us to temporarily remove a Light Jedi Member we are able to resolve the issue quickly and effectively. Especially when we have clear definitions and guidelines we can point to. In this we seek to not only remind our fellow Jedi of his place, but also seek to address underlying causes (treat the disease not the symptom).
However than the Light Jedi are accused of desiring policy over being Light Jedi. Yet the Light Jedi are developing policies, not only serenely, objectively, with clear concern for individuals and their freedoms, but also policies which will endorse said traits.
There always seems to be this outside stigma that we must embody the Light Jedi, but we cannot define that clearly, else we kill it. That double-standard - Be a Light Jedi, well what does that mean? It means be you. Well how is that different from being a Sith? It just is, because you are already a Light Jedi, because you are compassionate.
Kate, Ellen, great examples of compassionate Light Jedi. They seek to balance that trait with the rest of the Path and thus far (in my personal observations) have done a great job of doing so. Erik and Alethea would both express the virtues of compassion as a Jedi. Ricardo as well. In fact the only Light Jedi who would say compassion is not necessary and even should be cautioned against, is myself. This being a direct thought of Irvine's assumption that the Light Jedi have somehow lost their compassion.
Where does this leave us in the grand scheme of policy and rules? Well the Light Jedi is a tough path. It is a path of rules on behavior and conduct. We do not get the freedom to act as we want - as recent events have proven. And will no doubt do so again. For years there has been a free-for-all, that is slowly changing. We are pulling our collective years of experience and studying, and seeing what fits, what doesn't, what is personal, and what is core to the path.
This develops into regulations, by-laws, policy, positions of enforcement, etc. All so we can say we are Light Jedi and have something to point to when asked - what the heck does that mean? Is this Light Jedi Master acting unJedi-like? What can we do to resolve the current situation?
The Point: We all live a life of personal freedom. Some of us have freely chosen to walk a path which is defined and regulated. There is the Jedi Code which means we should conduct ourselves in a peaceful, knowledgeable, serene, and harmonious way of life which is conducive to the Force. Is it so bad to have that as a policy of conduct, enforced, by the Light Jedi? I do not believe so. But than again, I am one of those crazy people who continues to chose to live this path. Policy is a part of being a Light Jedi. It does not remove individuality - it simply reminds us (when we fail and we will fail) what is expected of us. And what steps can be taken to ensure we honor the site we are at and the path that we chose to walk.
