Tomorrow the US Midterm Elections will come to a close, and afterwards it will not be long before we start looking at the presidential elections of 2020. No one knows what is in store for America- though we all have an idea of what the worst case and best case scenarios are depending on the outcome of tomorrow. So I think it’s time to address the topic of letting things flow.
Whatever the outcome tomorrow, we Jedi have to remember that Congress only holds so much power over us. Over the weekend I watched a Christian documentary called “Hope Has a Name” and it speaks of Christian women that take massive risks to their safety all the time in order to help others and share God’s love. Despite going into areas which persecute them, they maintain the faith that their work is right. They transform the areas they go into, by simply transforming small areas. And eventually it gains some traction and brings more good things to the community they wish to impact.
In more recent years, as the Jedi Community continues to be more online than offline, it may seem like the only way that we can impact the world around us is by sparking conversations about politics and trying to impact the way people consider their vote. As though the only way to improve the world is by using a vote once every couple/few years. It certainly can help, but it’s not the only thing that Jedi have the ability to do.
In Illinois, the Chicago Jedi Chapter participates in a program to feed the hungry, set up lightsaber skits for children and help maintain parks. In Michigan, we have an individual Jedi that is in social work. In Colorado and Pennsylvania I can name off a few Jedi that are police officers. I know of Jedi that volunteer with Search and Rescue in the West too. Some that offer their time online to help people during a crisis. And so many more.
So come the end of tomorrow. Whatever the outcome, whether you like it or not, let’s please just remember that as individuals (and if you have access to one, Chapters) we have the power to impact our communities in a way that the government can never take away from us- if only we seize the opportunity and never give up.
