To be able to successfully practice meditation one must acknowledge the fact that it is a life long journey which requires the utmost dedication and concentration. Meditation is known by a lot as zazen(classic zen meditation) and for those who prefer moving meditation tai chi chuan. In meditation one seeks inner peace and empowerment through the process of regulating the breath and clearing the mind(in most case's). In order to successfully train in the ways of the shadow you must be able to keep a calm mind which is normally focused on the moment plus the ability to control ones emotions which by the way can be surly developed by the use of meditation. In my opinion i think that there is no "true" or "correct" way to meditate as long as it involves self reflection and control plus the most important key: concentration.
You should start your meditation periods by first making a journal for meditation records of time, experiences, thoughts etc. This helps greatly because if you are having trouble with meditation or you are receiving adnormal sensations and thoughts sometimes in the form of visions, you can easily look back upon your records and see what you did wrong or if these thoughts or visions could be somehow connected to another. Plus importantly find a form of meditation the properly suits YOU along the lines of comfort or proper positions for breathing. This checklist can help decide if your position is right or your overall meditation performance is correct.
Is this position comfortable? will it later on lead to noticeable physical discomfort? can i regulate my breathing for calm and relaxation? is my mind clear of all thoughts? does this overall suit me?
These key things to look at might help but if you wish develop your own checklist. As far as mental state of mind goes it is recommended not to keep your mind on a particular thoughts or thoughts because this might lead to distractions and break your concentration, if thoughts appear while you meditate just let them normally pass by and most of all DO NOT get angry if it happens because it is normal a low and if you get angry it will break your concentration. Just acknowledge the thought and let it pass freely, remember meditation is a journey of great proportions and unbelievable benefits if used correctly and patiently. I conclude this meditation lecture with a sample meditation technique for you to try and might help get a better idea of meditation and a possible min set for it.
Meditation:
Find a relatively quiet room where it is possibly free from distractions and most noises although occasional normal noise's is acceptable. Set up a couple of pillows on the ground for you to sit upon so it does not create distraction, sit down either in a lotus(crossed legged) position or a zazen(siting on floor with feet tucked under buttocks with hands placed in lap or thighs). Before closing your eyes regulate your breathing by taking slow deep breaths to calm the body a good way to do so is breath in slowly and when you exhale count slowly from 5 down to zero while you exhale. Once your body is relaxed we can now start the meditation process.
Close your eyes slowly and stare into the dark shade your eyes have created for you. Take slow deep breaths counting up to 9 and then starting over once again. Remember to keep the mind as clear as possible from distractions or thoughts which bring away concentration.
Do not become discouraged if a thought appears in your mind just acknowledge it and return back to concentration letting the thought float away. Once your breath is regulated and your mind clear this is when you are at most attuned or "one" with the force i might say for humors sake. This will eventually lead to tingly feelings all over your body(which is the force flowing through you) which over time will become apart of your normal everyday being.
With your mind clear and your body relaxed this opens up your body fully so it makes you sort of a "antenna" for force flow which later on leads to the force answering questions or giving visions or etc. which shows you are able to start and use the force.
With meditation you build force attunement which leads to possible "force powers" which in my opinion is nothing compared to a well disciplined mind and a strong spirit. A good lecture to read about such things is Shinobi's lecture on self hypnotism or "saiminjutsu".
